Family Photo

It was a beautiful Spring day in central Indiana. Temps in the 50's with sunshine. Today was a short (8 hours) day for me, so we took advantage of it and walked the dogs, which we haven't been able to do much lately, because of my hours, weather, and lack of daylight. Afterwards, the woofers and I were sitting in the back of the truck, and Les snapped a cell pic of us.

Smiles all around.

Let It Snow!

Sunday into Monday we received a late-season snow storm.  About 8-9" of the glorious white stuff fell.  Unfortunately it's already melting off, so now we must wait until November or so to see more of it.

Of course, I took pictures of the doggies playing in it.

Some recent meals. The smaller meals are breakfasts.

Turkey breast chunks, beef patty, beef kidney, coconut oil.

Sully and Separation Anxiety

This is Sully.

He's a Beagle/Dachshund/? mix my brother/parents adopted a few years ago from the Indianapolis Humane Society, and about five years old. He's sweet, smart, and affectionate. He has separation anxiety.

My stepdad is retired, but my mom works. About two years ago, he had his first episode when he was home alone for nine hours, and ripped up carpet. I gave them a wire crate that Neeko had outgrown, and they put him in it when he's going to be alone for more than four or five hours, which is rare.

A week and a half ago my stepdad was hospitalized with severe pneumonia. He and Sully are buddies, spending the majority of most days together. My mom took FMLA, to be at the hospital 35 minutes away with my stepdad. She was crating Sully on days she knew she would be gone all day. On the fourth day, he busted out of his (wire) crate, and destroyed the blinds in their living room, and ate over a pound of ground beef my mom left thawing on her table. She called me that night, laughing about the situation but slightly concerned about the beef. I told her to watch for diarrhea and and to try and reinforce the crate.

My stepfather was discharged from the hospital yesterday, the pneumonia gone. Unfortunately he is very weak, so was admitted to a rehab facility for two or three weeks to regain his strength.

My mom called me last night, very frustrated and on the verge of tears. All the stress is catching up with her. After arriving home from the rehab facility, she discovered that Sully had once again busted out, and destroyed the new blinds she hung, along with the curtains in her bedroom.

Today Les and I picked up a sturdy plastic crate for Sully, and took it to my mom.

Sully liked it ok, but he liked the bully stick I brought him more. We are all fairly confident he won't bust out of it.

Sully misses my stepdad. The rehab facility allows pets to visit, so my mom is going to take him in.

While there, Les replaced an outlet and light switch for my mom. To repay us, she gave us three packages of ground venison, because she knows my crew loves venison.

March BarkBox Review

Yesterday, we received our March BarkBox!  I love getting fun things in the mail.  You can read the reviews for the January and February Barkboxes.

The Goods

Harry Barker Hemp Bone in Orange.  Approximate retail value $12.00.  Cute, large, stuffed bone.  Fun and quirky.  Unfortunately not durable enough for my crew.  This will be going to the shelter doggies.

Lollycadoodle Wool Mouse.  Approximate retail value $12.95.  Handmade in Nepal, and Fair-Trade certified.  Another very cute soft toy.  Unfortunately I don't think it would last more than 20 second with my heathens.  Into the bag for shelter doggies it goes.  Sometimes I wish my dogs weren't so big, with such strong mouths, so that they could enjoy these darling toys.  But I wouldn't trade my rotten dogs for the world.

Feel Good Treats Classic Ranch Bars.  Approximate retail value $6.95.  Canadian company who sources their ingredients from Canada, Italy and New Zealand.  Quality ingredients in these 1" square biscuit-type treats. Added bonus that they are yeast-free, so Bruce can enjoy them as well. I attempted to break one in two pieces, and was unable to do so.  They are quite hard.  Each of my three readily accepted these.

Poop bag holder and poop bags.  Approximate retail value $2.99(?)  Promotional item from Angie's List.  Poop bags are an item that nearly every dog owner will always need, so I'm sure these will eventually be put to good use.

Little Eatz Perfect Peanut Butter Cookies.  Approximate retail value $3.99.  These are hailed as "the treat you BOTH can eat."  This excites me greatly, as I'm frequently tempted, and sometimes do, try dog treats.  These have good ingredients, and are yeast free.  Very clever concept.  The real test came when I decided to take a bite out of one prior to offering the woofers one each.  They are delicious!!  Perfect PB taste!  Of course the woofers wanted one even more after seeing me eat one.  I'm very impressed with these treats, as were the doggies.

Overall I feel this month's BarkBox was kind of meh.  I'd like to see more durable toys offered, though this month's toys were cute and unique.  By far, my favorite item was the Little Eatz cookies.  If you see them available, I highly recommend buying some.  If your dogs are lucky, you'll share with them.

Um, I'm a Wizpert

I received an email today, asking if I would like to be "expert" for the Wizpert platform. I did some quick research, and learned that it is not a scam, but a legitimate company, and signed up. What happens next, I do not know.

March Spoiled Rotten Box Review

Our March Petflow Spoiled Rotten Dog Box came in the mail today.  You can view reviews for January and February.

The Goods

Kyjen Invincible Gecko.  Approximate retail value $13.49.  This is a large, stuffing-free toy with two large squeakers in it.  Supposedly the squeakers still squeak even if punctured.  I have read good things regarding the durability of Kyjen toys.  However, I don't feel this one will stand up next to my crew.  It's going in the bag to be taken to the shelter when I make my next drop off.

Ark Naturals Sea "Mobility" Mighty Beef Treats.  Approximate retail value $5.99.  Soft treats containing glucosamine for joint health.  Four treats contain 500 mg of glucosamine, which is about half of Neeko's daily dose.  The ingredients are decent, and this treat does not include yeast.  Yay!!  I will give all three woofers these treats, but reserve the bulk of them for Neeko.  This is not something I would necessarily go out of my way to purchase, but I will happily give them to my crew.

LED Bone Pet Safety Light.  Approximate retail value $2.99.  We don't do many night time walks in unlit areas.  Still, this is a handy gadget to have around.  I haven't tested it out, but I do like that it has an easy clip on it, so that it can quickly be placed on or taken off of a dog's collar.

Natural Balance Lamb & Brown Rice Jerky Bars.  Approximate retail value $7.99.  Soft treat bars with decent ingredients.  Easily broken into smaller pieces.  This is the first time I have seen these treats, and probably an item I would purchase on occasion.  These are also yeast-free, so Bruce can enjoy them as well.  I did give all three a small sample of these, and they were readily accepted.

Natural Balance Chicken & Sweet Potato Jerky Bars.  Approximate retail value $7.99.  Same product as above, but with slightly different ingredients, namely protein and carbs.  Again without yeast.  Natural Balance has made a name for itself selling limited-ingredient, single protein source kibbles for dogs with food allergies, and maintains that success with their treats.  As mentioned previously, this is something I would purchase on occasion.

True-Dose Calming for Dogs and Cats.  Approximate retail value $3.99.  The retail pharmacy at the hospital I work at, while small, actually has a decent selection of pet products.  They carry this line.  I have actually contemplated purchasing this product, along with the glucosamine, but couldn't bring myself to with it being $25 for a small bottle.  I'm delighted to have received four sample packs of it.  Bruce and Faolan both have some anxiety (I attribute it to them being rescues), and while Bruce takes medication, he does display anxious behaviors.  I will try this on both of them.

I am very pleased with this month's Spoiled Rotten Box, and am continuing the subscription.

Does anyone else receive subscription boxes, for pets or themselves?  If so, what box/boxes do you receive?  I'm always wanting to try new stuff, particularly for my dogs.  If you know of another pet subscription box, please let me know!

P.S.-I ordered a Love With Food box for myself, and received it this month.  Very neat concept.  I also ordered a three month gift subscription for sister-in-law, and she loves it.  I learned of Love With Food from Jennifer at Ramblings of a Suburban Mom.
