I have written about Bruce's anxiety in the past. Neeko while mostly calm and confident, has what I perceive to be rare stressful moments. Faolan also seems to have some anxiety, though not as severe as Bruce's. What is it with my anxious rescued boys?
Pet Naturals sent us two full-size bags of their calming treats, one for medium/large dogs, and one for small dogs.
The active and inactive ingredients were identical in the two bags, and the treats for medium/large dogs contained twice the amount of active ingredients as the treats for small dogs.
They are to be given as treats, and appear as such.

Both the active and inactive ingredients are of decent to excellent quality. Unfortunately for Bruce, these treats contain brewer's yeast, so I was unable to offer any to him, related to his notorious yeast allergy.
It is believed that stress depletes vitamin B (Thiamine is B1, and an active ingredient in this product), and that dogs deficient in B vitamins will display anxious and sometimes unruly behavior. Vitamin B is water-soluble, so it cannot be overdosed. Excess is simply excreted in urine.
L-theanine is an amino acid derived from green tea. Research supports the fact that it can help to calm and relax both humans and canines. It is the primary ingredient in a (pricey) anxiety medication/supplement for dogs, Anxitane.
Colostrum is the first milk a being produces after giving birth. I am assuming the colostrum present in these treats is of bovine (cow) origin, which is widely available at health foods stores. Colostrum is heralded for its benefits to immune health, mental health, GI health, and overall well-being.
According to Pet Naturals, the Colostrum Calming Complex works synergistically with L-theanine, while the Thiamine supports calming and relaxation.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, we began our move. We had several people assisting us, and the dogs spent the majority of the day in their crates or outside. All were visibly upset. Neeko's ears were more wide-set and flattened, and Bruce and Faolan did plenty of whining and barking. Early in the afternoon, I offered two of the large treats to both Neeko and Faolan.
Faolan is a well-known treat snob. It is nothing for him to flat out refuse a treat. He will sometimes take a treat, drop it, and walk away, or roll on it and then walk away. After a quick sniff, he hate these with no hesitation. Success!!
Saturday evening, we moved the dogs to the new house. I was quite nervous as to how they would react. They did AMAZING!! I could not have been more pleased.
We continued moving things from the old house to the new house, with help from friends and family, over the next several days. I gave Neeko and Faolan either two large treats or four small treats both morning and evening. I could not have been more impressed with how well the dogs tolerated everything. When my dogs are stressed, they will occasionally snap or get growly with each other, and we did not have a single episode of this.
I am definitely a believer in these treats. Moving is stressful for humans, so I can only imagine what is was like for my dogs, being uprooted from their home and taken to a new place outside of their comfort zone, full of strange smells and sights. They handled it all so well, including all the people that were in and out of both houses.

Those sound pretty nice! Nola isn't an anxious dog, but she is not a fan of the vet's and gets jumpy with fireworks. Too bad these have soy in them. :( She's allergic.

ReplyDeleteI used these once for a long car trip with my Rottweiler mix... they REALLY helped. She was much more relaxed, but they didn't make her dopey like medications will. I signed up for a bag!
