Bully Horn Review

While out and about this evening, Les and I stopped in at Pet Supplies Plus.  As always, I had to do a walk-around.  This store is small enough, and I visit it frequently enough, that new products catch my eye.

Tonight, I noticed The Original Bully Horn for the first time.

Of course I had to buy three, so each dog could enjoy one of their own, and avoid the risk of scuffles.

Antlers are a hit here, so I purchased these in hopes that they would be as well.  PSP had them on sale for $9.95 each, so I could not resist.

These bull horns are large, and hollow in the center.  I am considering stuffing them at some point, kind of like an all natural inedible raw "kong"

Size comparison.  Thick and heavy, weighing nearly one pound.

I purchased these knowing for a fact that Neeko and Faolan would enjoy them, and they did not let me down.  Faolan's butt hit the ground as soon as he saw/smelled it.  Neeko sang for hers, and then danced around it after I gave it to her.  They both had a good time chewing on theirs, and Faolan and I practiced some trading.  He does resource guard, though not as severely as Bruce.
Historically, Bruce has not enjoyed chewing or chew toys nearly as much as Neeko or Faolan.  I think very few dogs enjoy chewing as much as Neeko.  This occasion proved no different.  He enjoyed, but grew tired/bored with it after about 15 minutes.
Bruce being a good boy, waiting on his horn.  Ignore my hand weights by his paw.

After much sniffing and licking, he finally decided to actually chew on it.

One thing I did not notice upon purchasing them-the horn I gave Bruce was noticeably thinner than the other two.  He actually chewed off a couple of quarter-sized pieces.  PSP has a very nice return policy, so I am going to attempt to exchange this one for one that is thicker.

All in all, I am quite impressed with these.  The price could not be beat, at 40 percent the price of a smaller sized antler.  Neeko and Faolan both really enjoyed chewing on theirs, and Bruce liked it okay.  I will be returning the thinner one next week.

Disclaimer-I purchased this product of my own accord, and was not asked to review it.  All opinions are strictly my own.

  1. I saw these in my local store as well. I wanted to buy one, but, having two dogs who've broken teeth has made me very leery of harder chews.

  2. Oh those look pretty big! I'm sure Shiner would enjoy chewing up something like that.

  3. Wows! Those are HUGE! Ma hasn't bought me antlers cause I only like chewin' on stuffs I can eventually 'eat' (ie: bully's, tendons), I ignore harder chews. Ma wishes I liked them cause they would keep me occupied longer...

  4. Those look interesting. Do they smell like hoofs do? Beamer loves hoofs, but I don't love the farm smell they give off.

    1. I did a sniff test for you! After chewing last night, the proximal end (where it was attached) was stinky. But I had to get within 8 inches to notice it. :-)

  5. Those look like a good option for vigorous chewers. I'm surprised I haven't seen them before! And good on Bruce to go for the horn and not the weights...

  6. We just got one of these for our dog today ... I like you had never heard or seen them before walking in to our local owned store. Our ASD [Anatolian Shepherd Dog] did the exact same thing he sniffed it & sat right down no order given or anything! He is not a rabid chewer and really it's silly I gave in he has 1/4 chewed antler, rawhide, chewie bonez...so add a horn to the mix ;) but I taken by surprise how heavy the horn is! Now time to convince him I don't need to sit & watch him chew it! :) Great blog thanks for posting!!

  8. Recently, I bought one, as well. Bull Horn. I recently had a little concern about whether it is okay for my Sandie upon hearing the hard chew sounds unique to her chewing on the bull horn. From a quick google, it appears there are articles that would suggest the bull horns/antlers are not necessarily recommended because of the resulting damage to teeth. Yikes! Are your dogs' teeth still doing ok? Also, do either of the dogs do an occasional cough of sorts when chewing on them, as if maybe the particles are going down the "wrong pipe"? My gut is leading me after two days with the bull horn, to perhaps put it aside until I get the vet's take on the horn and my dog's response to it.

  9. Bought two of these from target 3 days ago and just noticed the splinters in the carpet today. My smaller dog is fine but my 60lb husky has been having diarrhea since 2-3 days ago and just today she's been having blood in her stool, don't know if she ate the splinters and has a blockage or if it might be something else unrelated but I'm taking her to the vet at 8am. I will know for sure tmr when they take X-rays, but please be cautious of these horns.
